Student app series

Collection of 3 analogous apps designed to alleviate studying, scheduling, and budgeting struggles among students.

Project overview

Student App Series is a collection of 3 analogous app designs which I created in the final semester of my degree program. These apps were designed to alleviate studying, scheduling, and budgeting struggles among students. Being a student myself at the time of this project, I dug deep to understand the experiences of my peers which led me to the idea of a suite of life skill based apps.

My contributions

As the sole designer responsible for the curation of this concept, I owned the end-to-end experience for all three apps. This included user research, prototyping, wireframing, and design ideation.

Problem to be solved

Almost half of academic institutions believe that recent graduates lack life skills needed in the workforce.

Gathering insights

Throughout this project, I utilized the process of design thinking. From first-hand experience and extensive user research, I defined the main problems facing students as studying, scheduling, and budgeting. To empathize with users further, I conducted more broad research among college students. These were some of my findings:

Wireframing the solution

Based on the initial research that I conducted, I began the ideation phase by wireframing the screens for each app concept. To produce an optimal solution, I focused on establishing:

  • Clear and consistent behaviors
  • Simple yet intuitive page layouts
  • Data-driven content placement & inclusion

Design system creation

After creating the wireframes and doing data analysis, I understood what to incorporate within each page design. From here, I began my second phase of ideating by creating a design system. Implementing this was essential as a means to standardize components and UI styles.

The design system is the single source of truth for all 3 of my apps. This documentation ensures a consistent product design for all current and future feature implementation. I made sure to document color usage, typography, iconography, and various components (navigation, buttons, inputs, etc.).

User journey flow

As the designs were being iterated upon, I began to finalize the desired user flow for each app. This step helped to define & ensure successful paths for user behaviors. After the flows were completed, they were also used in the test phase to compare actual versus desired actions taken by users.

Finalizing the designs

During the prototyping phase, I began working on high-fidelity mock-ups. This is when my vision for this concept truly started coming together. These designs went through several rounds of iterations before they were ready for user testing. Once finalized, I turned them into interactive prototypes using InVision.

Feedback and revisions

After completing the first round of high-fidelity mock-ups, I started to conduct more user testing. I used this feedback to further iterate upon my designs to improve the overall experience. Some of the feedback I got was:

"Excellent color scheme - feels professional."

"The designs and layouts are well thought out."

"UI was not aesthetically obnoxious. Pleasing visuals."

Overall, I had a lot of fun working on this concept. It's not often that you can work on a project that you own completely and that has your full time to dedicate to. I was able to further learn about and develop my UX methodologies throughout the entirety of the project which I can apply to my future work.
